Data from a report on the diet of low-income groups in Europe suggest that the contribution of fat to total energy intake and the higher consumption of processed meat is more frequent among economically disadvantaged groups than for high-income groups. With the reduction in prices of food production in recent years(frequently resulting from governmental subsidies and farming practices), the food industry is able to produce low-cost, highly-palatable, energy-dense foods at huge portion sizes. The Low Income Diet and Nutrition Survey (LIDNS) was commissioned by the Food Standards Agency. Methodology: Sample of 3728 people from 2477 households surveyed between November 2003 and January 2005 using face to face interviews and random self-completion questionnaire. In addition, low intakes of vitamins and minerals (in particular vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron (in women) and calcium) were identified in the poorer sectors of all countries involved in the study. Availability, access and price are some of the issues linked to nutritional insecurity. Similarly in the USA, income and education level have been linked to lower diet quality. In China, rapid income change has had an impact on diet as well. The term nutrition insecurity is used to describe the failure to meet the recommended dietary guidelines of a population.
